Interesting phenomenon: despite being roughly stable weight for 2 years now, a lot of people who have seen me in the past two years, but only intermittently, will still remark that I've lost weight since they last saw me. Must take quite a few impressions to recalibrate the persisted mental model.

I am So Glad you posted this. My 20% body mass reduction followed yours by roughly a year later. And even though I have seen the same individuals and groups of people on more than one occasion since dropping the weight, I still get similar repeat comments.
I think it is partially due to the transience of memory, and partially due to seasonal (ie attire) variations. Long term memories and impressions made in winter coats, business attire, sweaters, etc, perhaps do not get logged into the same data storage locations as those logged with gym attire, swim wear, etc?
I thought it was just happening to me. I am very happy to hear I am not alone. =)
I got that comment recently even from my doctor, who should know better!
Your doctor is just flirting with you as normal.
Stephan Guyenet talks about a body fat set point. i believe it refers to the minimum number of times a person sees you before you can win the point that you've lost weight.
This is ultimately followed by body fat match point?
indeed.
"how much have you lost?"
"forty, love."
I returned from a business trip to the corporate mother ship last week, and again, people who had not seen me since last January or last September INSISTED I'd lost more weight. Nope... still a 34 waist and just over 200... but thanks for the compliments co-workers. =)
