Finally got HDTV a few weeks ago. Wasn't sure I'd notice a difference.
I notice a difference.
Some things look fantastic. Sports tend to look ludicriously good. Nature shows, Top Gear, and GT5: excellent. Movies are a mixed bag. Some look wonderful, but sometimes the HD makes them look like they were shot on video. Edges too sharp and flat backgrounds or something. There are lots of settings for the TV, though, I think there are plenty of tweaks to optimize for film. Overall, definitely enjoying it.

1080i or 1080p? Which didja get?
I like the Sharp we got - TDS and Colbert look very crisp in it. Weird to see individual hairs in Stewart's beard, clearly on screen. We got the 1080p, but Qwest (our local satellite signal provider) only broadcasts in 1080i. Oh well.
1080p
Got a Sharp (again). The Philips sets were amazing, but more than twice the price. I was almost going to go with a plasma set, but the one I wanted in my price range was hard to find, and the other brands in the same price range looked a bit weak on image quality. Our non-HD LCD TV for the past few years has been a Sharp, and we've been very happy with it.
So this one is 40", 1080p, and LED backlit. Ticked all the boxes, and good value for money.
Our dig sat service is the same, 1080i content. But I'm sure I don't notice the difference.
Sounds like we may have the same set =) ...plasmas, as far as I can tell, fade over time & consume more energy. The sales guy sold us on the backlit plasma, and away from Sony & LG, who he said had vastly inferior designs & R&D - I did not independently verify his claims, but we are quite happy with the Sharp Aquos (LC-40E700UN, I think.... ours is 40 inch horizontal, 46 inch diagonal).
i love the HD picture, but bummed by how long it takes everything to sync up. non-HD commercials cause my receiver to flip in and out of HD mode, and re-connecting takes a few seconds -- to the point that when an HD program comes back on, i see picture but get no sound for 3-5 seconds.
do you guys experience the same?
Weird. That's never happened with my setup.
i don't recall -- are you typically running audio through the TV or through a receiver?
Through the tv.
