iPhone Travel Tip
Took me a minute to figure this one out: I use skype on the iphone to call long distance and to make calls, if possible, when abroad. I wanted to check my voicemail while abroad. To do this I call my own number and hit 9 when it rolls to voicemail. Not thinking about it, I called myself from skype, which of course then set my phone ringing. Not the result I wanted. To disable all incoming calls while still being able to use skype and the rest of the internet, turn airplane mode on (I love airplane mode, so much easier than turning phone off in movies and meetings and such), but then turn wifi back on. You now have phone off but internet on.

yes, that's what i do when out of country so i don't accidentally incur a roaming charge.
I normally turn only data roaming off, still letting the phone make or receive calls. But even SMS fees are egregious here.
